Chiropractic care is the science of locating spinal misalignments, reducing their impact to the nervous system through the chiropractic adjustment, thus allowing the body to function at it’s inborn optimum potential without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic care focuses on the restoration of health and the maintenance of health through a properly functioning nervous system. Chiropractors perform the chiropractic adjustment to re-align these misalignments.

Subluxation to break it down – “sub” or less than, like subzero is less than zero and “luxation” is another word for dislocation which means completely out of the joint. So a subluxation is less than a complete dislocation. This is a term used in the chiropractic care field to describe what happens when a misalignment of the vertebrae occurs in the spinal column. Chiropractors believe this to be one of the main causes of pain and eventually disease and can be caused by car accidents, falls, incorrect lifting, stress, lack of exercise, improper sleeping position, poor posture, etc. Through the use of manual detection and the chiropractic adjustment, chiropractors are able to relieve pressure and irritation on the nerves, restore joint mobility, and help return the body to normal function.

Chiropractors perform the chiropractic adjustment which is ordinarily painless. Occasionally, depending on the type of muscle spasm, soreness, and restriction, a patient may temporarily experience tenderness following a chiropractic adjustment. Every person responds to a chiropractic adjustment in different ways; however, most patients report a feeling of relief, calmness, improved mobility, and a sense of well being after their chiropractic adjustment.

Dozens of research studies have documented the safety and effectiveness of the chiropractic adjustment performed by chiropractors. Because of the success of the chiropractic adjustment in treating back and neck problems and as a result of recent research and changing attitudes, chiropractic care has become more accepted and is now considered by many to be a part of mainstream western medicine. In fact, many hospitals now have chiropractors on staff and they are a part of the Medicare/Medicaid systems. Chiropractors are currently being incorporated into the U.S. military health system. Chiropractors are also recognized by the court system as expert witnesses in the field of chiropractic care.

No. This is dangerous. You can over stretch the ligaments that help hold the structure of the spine together causing you even greater instability in your spine. This question is frequently asked because people associate the “cracking” or “popping” of one’s back or neck with a chiropractic adjustment. The two are not the same thing. If a person has a desire to “crack” their neck or back it is often because one area of their spine is fixated or jammed causing another area to move too much and “pop”, sometimes by it’s self. When you “crack” your back you may be relieving the tension temporarily, but do you notice how it keeps coming back? That is because you are not giving yourself a specific chiropractic adjustment. The cause of the spinal tension, the fixated or jammed vertebrae, has not been corrected. Even chiropractors cannot perform the chiropractic adjustment on themselves.

When chiropractors perform the chiropractic adjustment, tiny pockets of gas are released from the joints, making a “popping” noise. It’s the same sound you hear when you pop your knuckles. Not all chiropractic adjustment techniques produce this noise. In fact, some chiropractic adjustment techniques use little force and thus produce no noise at all. It’s not a sign that the chiropractic adjustment is working or not working. Only chiropractors are professionally trained and qualified to deliver a chiropractic adjustment and this is a vital part of your chiropractic care.

No. The extent to which you choose to benefit from your chiropractic care is always up to you. Each and every one of us is solely responsible for the quality of our health and well-being. Chiropractors perform a chiropractic exam before delivering a chiropractic adjustment and beginning your chiropractic care.

Chiropractors must go through 4 yrs of undergraduate studies which is their bachelors degree and satisfies the prerequisites for entrance into the doctor of chiropractic program. Chiropractors then go through a 4yr intensive graduate program which in some schools can be finished in 3 1/2 yrs with 25 credit hours per quarter. Chiropractors also complete over 400 clinic hours for their internship where they learn the chiropractic adjustment and perfect the delivery of the chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors schooling differs from a medical doctors in that chiropractors complete their internship before they leave school whereas medical doctors complete their internship after school. Also in most states chiropractors do not have hospital privileges so chiropractors are not required to do a residency after finishing chiropractic school. Chiropractors are required to take and pass state and national boards as well as physical therapy boards in order to be able to practice, this is the same for medical doctors. The course of study for chiropractors is very similar to medical doctors in some areas and very different in others. Chiropractors receive more training in some areas such as diagnosis and neurological testing yet medical doctors have more training in obstetrics and mental health. Their are other differences such as chiropractors learn chiropractic care philosophy and the chiropractic adjustment and not as much about medicine and toxicology as the medical doctor would. When chiropractors graduate they are board certified chiropractic doctors. Chiropractors are the only healthcare professional trained and skilled to deliver the chiropractic adjustment.

Chiropractors as a whole believe there is a time and place for medical care. Chiropractors believe medical care should be used for what it was meant for and that is emergency care. Outside of emergency care, chiropractors will typically always recommend chiropractic care and the chiropractic adjustment over taking medications to resolve a problem with the body. Chiropractic care can help with almost any non emergency condition as it restores function to the body through the chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic care and the chiropractic adjustment by no means replaces medical care and emergency treatment. Being under chiropractic care may help you to avoid emergencies over time that may have occurred with the body had it not been functioning properly however we always recommend routine check ups by your medical doctor as they are professionally trained to locate, detect and treat emergencies and may recognize one before it happens. We recommend routine chiropractic care and a chiropractic adjustment as well as routine check ups by your medical doctor.
