Fibromyalgia affects 5 million Americans and mostly women. Many people are diagnosed with fibromyalgia during middle age. Fibromyalgia is a chronic type condition which is associated with fatigue, widespread joint pain and tenderness in multiple areas. Sometimes fibromyalgia becomes an all to common diagnosis for people when visiting their family doctor. Although the prevalence of fibromyalgia seems to be quite high, the understanding of the cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown.
The causes of fibromyalgia are believed to be many. One cause for fibromyalgia is genetics, which all to commonly gets used for any condition that remains unexplained. Another possible cause of fibromyalgia is hypersensitivity of nerve cells, this could very well be yet what is causing that to happen? Some suspect repetitive injuries to be the cause of fibromyalgia, if that were the case a person would have to have had an injury to every painful area of their body that hurts and this is most often not the case. Still some suspect and imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain to be a cause of fibromyalgia, again what is causing this to happen if this is the source of the problem?
Let’s take a look at the current health care systems treatment of fibromyalgia. Typically a person is given medication for pain so painkillers, sometimes muscle relaxers if they have a lot of muscle spasms. Often times a person experiences anxiety with fibromyalgia so they receive a medication to help with that. Very commonly people with fibromyalgia have fatigue so they may receive a medication for that as well. A person with fibromyalgia may have difficulty concentrating due to the fact they are constantly in pain so they may receive a medication for that. Also when a person has fibromyalgia they may not be able to fall into a restful sleep so they may receive a medication for that. There can be many other symptoms associated with this chronic condition as well and most likely a person would receive a medication for those symptoms as well.
To sum up the current medical model at least in Alpharetta is to manage symptoms. This is all that can be done when a cause of fibromyalgia is not identified. The problem with seeking help in an emergency based field of healthcare is you most likely will receive emergency care. The use of medications is helpful when used to treat acute situations or life saving events, they are hardly the answer to a chronic condition such as fibromyalgia. What effect do all these medications have on one another and how do they interact with a person’s physiology when used all together, sadly no one knows. Many times people with fibromyalgia develop symptoms from medications which were being used to treat symptoms caused by another medication. Sounds terrible doesn’t it? Unfortunately people with fibromyalgia may need to take some form of medication to just get through the day, if no other type of care in Alpharetta is found.
I am writing this article to let you know there is another type of healthcare that exists in Alpharetta that can help people who suffer from fibromyalgia. This other form of healthcare is holistic chiropractic care. We would define holistic chiropractic care to be a form of healthcare that uses natural methods to help heal and repair the body without the use of drugs or surgery. The foundation for this type of healthcare in Alpharetta would be to reestablish the proper alignment of the bones of the spine. This allows the signals that travel from the brain down the spinal cord and out the spinal nerves to reach the organ, muscle or gland uninhibited. When the bones of the spine or vertebrae misalign they damage the delicate spinal nerves. These spinal nerves carry important signals from the brain to the organ, muscle or gland letting them know how to function. When damage occurs to these nerves from misaligned vertebrae, the signal going to that organ, muscle or gland is altered and thus the function of that tissue is altered. This results in malfunction or dysfunction of that tissue.
What is dysfunction or malfunction? You can imagine it is anything that is not normal function. A muscle that constantly spasms would be considered dysfunction or malfunction. A painful part of the body that was not recently injured would be dysfunction or malfunction of that part of the body. An inability to fall into a restful sleep would be dysfunction or malfunction. Holistic chiropractic care in Alpharetta treats all parts of the body and looks at how all parts of the body interact with one another because they do. This is functional based healthcare. This is not emergency based healthcare.
Depending on the chiropractic practice a person goes to in Alpharetta will determine the training of that particular doctor, what methods they use to treat the body, how they define chiropractic care in their practice. Some practices address misalignments of the spine and that is all. Typically a holistic chiropractic practice takes into account other aspects outside of the spine and nervous system. At Holistic Health Center, P.C. in Alpharetta our foundation is in the proper alignment of the spine as many other chiropractic practices however we use an instrument to lightly adjust the bones of the spine. The form of diagnosis we use is Applied Kinesiology which uses muscle response testing to communicate with the body to find out what is wrong with the body and what the body needs. We also practice Functional Endocrinology which uses functional blood chemistry analysis and therapeutic grade nutritional products to help heal and restore function to organs and glands. We also utilize a variety of other techniques, therapies and healing modalities which are too many to mention here.
In Fibromyalgia Treatment Alpharetta Part II we will continue more about the types of treatment offered at our holistic chiropractic practice in Alpharetta for fibromyalgia and also some functionally based causes of fibromyalgia, we have already discussed the medically suspected causes.
